SMT. GEETHA HEGDE

Geetha Hegde, born on 1st October 1955 in Kelaginoor village, HonnavarTaluk, Uttar Kannada District, hails from a family of Yakshagana artistes. Her mother Smt.Mahadevi Mahabaleshwar Bhat was known as a very good singer with a very melodious voice and a brilliant layajnana. In her school days Geetha with her soothing and powerful voice, won several prizes in competitions held for Bhajans, Bhavageethe and also film music. Her mother was very keen to teach her classical music, but could not for many reasons. But, her mother's dream came true when Geetha married G.S.Hegde, a Tabla Player as well as an ardent lover of classical music. Encouraged by her husband, she learnt classical vocal Hindustani from Pandit Kamalakar Bhat, Kerekai, for Syears, later with Pandit VinayakaTorvi for over 10 years. She has performed in several platforms in Karnataka, Goa and Satara. But after their son Dhananjay Hegde, a child prodigy, began giving public performances she devoted all her time to teach classical vocal music. Since twenty years she has been teaching many students. Her dedication and love and affection towards disciples are truly genuine. She believes in teaching every student individually and regularly. Her discipline, and technique adopted has proved to be very fruitful. A few of her senior students are considered to be good performing artistes today. Also currently some students are themselves teaching music and few more are very promising budding artistes. She also had a short stint in Bangkok, where she taught music and created interest and awareness for classical music. Geetha Hegde with her husband G.S.Hegde, started a music organization in Bangalore, seven years ago called "SAPTHAK'. In this short span of time "Sapthak" is considered to be a premier institution in the field of classical music. It is well known for propagating and promoting Hindustani classical music in all its varied forms.
